abstract Resins are prepared by heating at at least 100 DEG C. an alkoxylated phosphonitrilic compound with a polybasic inorganic acid or an anhydride thereof or with an alkyl ester or alkyl acid ester thereof or with an aromatic sulphonic acid, the polybasic inorganic acid being an oxyacid of phosphorus or of sulphur or boric acid. Alkoxylated phosphonitrilic compounds have the formula [PN(OR)m(OH)2-m]n where m is 0, 1 or 2, R is an alkyl or substituted alkyl group and n has an average value of 3 or more but generally below 10, methoxylated, ethoxylated and butoxylated derivatives are preferred. Specified reactants are phosphoric acid, its anhydride, sulphuric acid (including oleum), and benzene sulphonic acid. A mixture of polybasic acid and its anhydride may be used, as may also a mixture of alkoxylated phosphonitrilic compounds. The nitrilic compound may be added to the other reagent in successive portions and heated at 130 DEG to 220 DEG C. The resin so obtained may be cured by heating it to a higher temperature, e.g. above 250 DEG C., and may be mixed with a reinforcing material, e.g. glass fibre, asbestos fibre, mica or aluminium powder before curing.
