titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for cleaning animal tissue
abstract 933,363. Cleaning animal tissue; scraping tendons. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. June 26, 1961, No. 23106/61. Class 28 (2). In cleaning animal tissue, in particular tendons, the tendons are placed inside a cylinder 30 by removal and replacement of an end closure fitting 54, locked against inadvertent opening, and the cylinder is rotated so that portions of the tendons protrude through perforations 31 in the cylinder wall 33 and are scraped by a knife 80 resiliently urged close to the outer surface of the wall 33. At the same time, sprays of water are directed on to the inner and outer surfaces of the wall 33 by means of spray bars 112, 108 having nozzles 115, 110, respectively. Spray bar 112 is L-shaped and is connected to a pumped water supply through a hollow shaft 122 rotated within the cylinder-rotating shaft 38 at a speed faster than the latter (so that the entire inner surface of the cylinder wall 33 is sprayed) by means of a sheave 126 of smaller diameter than the sheave 46 on the cylinder shaft, both shafts having a common drive. Ducts 138, 136 supplying water to spray bars 112, 108, respectively, are equipped with solenoid-operated valves 142, 140 (Fig. 9), and are themselves fed with water, e.g. at 75‹ C., from a common duct 148 connected to a pump 150, a by-pass line 157 taking the water flow when the valves are closed. The sheaves 46, 126 are driven by V-belts from the drive-shaft pulley 130 of a motor 134. A common control means, e.g. an operative circuit including timing elements, is manually or automatically operable from a central control panel P to selectively actuate motor 134, pump 150, valve solenoids 144, 146, in timed cyclic relationship, the cylinder rotation and water jets being periodically interrupted to allow the tendons in the cylinder to re-orientate themselves and be evenly scraped.
