titleOfInvention 2-mercurimethyl-cumaranes
abstract The invention comprises 2-mercurimethyl cumaranes of formula <FORM:0932145/IV(a)/1> wherein X is a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, an alkyl-carboxylic radical or an aryl carboxylic radical, R1 is hydrogen, a halogen atom, a hydroxy or nitro group, or a C1-C4 alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, thio-alkyl, p carboxylic or alkyl carboxylic acid radical, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or C1-C4 alkyl radicals or taken together form an alkylene group containing up to 3 carbon atoms to form a cycloalkane and n is a whole number from 1 to 3. Specific compounds include 2 - chloromercurimethyl-6-chloro - cumarane, 2 - acetylmercurimethyl-6-chloro - cumarane, 2 - chloromercurimethylcumarane and 2-acetylmercurimethyl-cumarane. They may be prepared by reacting o-allyl-phenols or 2-cycloalkenyl-phenols with mercury salts in an aqueous or alcoholic medium. Phenols specified include 2-allylphenol, 2,6-diallylphenol, 2,4,6-triallylphenol, 2 - allyl - 4 - methyl - phenol, 2-allyl-6-methylphenol, 2-allyl-6-isopropyl-phenol, 2-allyl-4-chlorophenol, 2-allyl-6-chlorophenol, 2-allyl-5-nitrophenol, 2-allyl-hydroquinone, 2-allyl-4-methoxyphenol, 2 - cyclopentenylphenol, 2-cyclopentenyl-4-methylphenol, 2-cyclopentenyl-4-chlorophenol and 2-cyclohexenylphenol. The compounds of the invention may be used as bactericides and fungicides.ALSO:Bactericidal and fungicidal compositions for treating plants comprise a carrier, diluent or extender and as active ingredient a 2-mercurimethyl cumarone of formula <FORM:0932145/VI/1> wherein X is a halogen atom, an hydroxy group, an alkyl-carboxylic radical or an aryl carboxylic radical, R1 is hydrogen, a halogen atom, an hydroxy or nitro group or a C1-4C alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, thioalkyl, carboxylic or alkyl carboxylic acid radical, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or C1-C4 alkyl radicals or taken together form an alkylene group containing up to 3 carbon atoms to form a cycloalkane and n is 1 to 3. Specific compounds include 2-chloromercurimethyl-6-chlorocumarane, 2 - acetylmercurimethyl - 6-chloro - cumarane, 2 - chloromercurimethyl-cumarane and 2-acetylmercurimethyl-cumarane. The compositions may include fertilisers, chlorinated cyclic hydrocarbons and phosphoric acid pesticides.
