titleOfInvention Process for the polymerisation of lactams
abstract In a process for the alkaline polymerization of at least one monomeric lactam having at least six carbon atoms in the ring, wherein the lactam is maintained at a temperature above its melting point, a compound having the formula L(MT)nRP where n is an integer from 1 to 10, L and P are the same or different alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals containing from 1 to 7 carbon atoms, which radicals may contain one or more substituents which are inert in said polymerization reaction, M and R are the same or different radicals of the formula <FORM:0931393/IV(a)/1> in which X, Y and Z are oxygen, sulphur or the imino radical and T is a divalent hydrocarbon carbon containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, which radical may contain one or more substituents which are inert in said polymerization reaction, or a salt of said compound is added to said lactam, either as such or after being dissolved in a suitable solvent. Specified lactams are S -caprolactam, enantholactam, capryllactam, dodecanolactam, a -methyl-S -caprolactam, b :d -dimethyl-S -caprolactam and b -phenyl-S -caprolactam. Specified additives are bis - (N - phenylcarbamoyloxy) - 1 : 4 - butane, bis-N : N1-(ethoxycarbonyl) hexane-1 : 6-diamine bis-(p-ethoxycarbonyloxy) benzene, bis-(nipropoxycarbonyloxy)-1 : 2-ethane, bis-(methoxycarbonyloxy)-p-xylene, bis-(N:N1-(ethoxythiocarbonyl) butane-1 : 4-diamine, bis-(N-benzylthiocarbamoyloxy)-1 : 6-hexane, N-(2-ethoxycarbonyloxyethyl) ethyl carbamate and bis-4 : 41-(ethoxycarbonyloxymethyl)-benzyl carbonate. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of finely divided metals, glass fibres or graphite. In the examples, S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of sodium methoxide, methanol and:- (1) bis-(N-phenylcarbamoyloxy)-1 : 4-butane and (2) bis-(n-propoxycarbamoyloxy)-1 : 4-butane.
