titleOfInvention | Improvements in resins derived from epoxy compounds |
abstract | A resin-forming composition comprises 0,1 to 4 parts by weight of boron trioxide and one part of a mono-epoxy compound boiling above 50 DEG C. The monoepoxides react to form thermoplastic products, and there are specified:-phenyl, allyl, butane diol, butyl, p-tolyl, isoamyl, and 3,3,5-trialkylcyclohexyl, mono-glycidyl ethers; styrene and butylene oxides; and glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate. Polyepoxides may be added to form thermosetting products, and there are specified:-glycidyl ethers of bisphenol A, resorcinol and 1,1,1-trimethylol propane, glycidyl esters unspecified, epoxidized oils (e.g. soya bean), 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl - 3,4 - epoxy - 6 - methylcyclohexanecarboxylate and epoxidized hydrocarbons, e.g. polybutadiene and butadiene/styrene copolymers. Optional additives mentioned are glass fibres, asbestos, quartz and silica; phenolaldehyde, furfural, silicone, polyester, polyamide and polysulphide resins; phthalic and pyromellitic acids and anhydrides; and diethylene triamine and ethylene diamine. In the examples B2O3 is reacted with the glycidyl ether of phenol, with and without the 3,4-epoxy compound mentioned above. Specifications 675,180, 679,536 and 912,115 are referred to. |
