titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of cyclododecanone and cyclododecanol
abstract A mixture of cyclododecanone and cyclododecanol is prepared by oxidising cyclododecane in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen at a temperature of 90 DEG to 150 DEG C. An oxidation catalyst such as the heavy metal salt of a fatty acid or a naphthenic acid e.g. the stearate, 2-ethyl-hexanoate or napthenate of cobalt or manganese is preferably present, and oxygen or air is injected into the cyclododecane containing the catalyst in suspension, in a continuous or discontinuous process. A conversion of from 5 to 20% is preferred and the mixture of ketone and alcohol may be separated from the other oxidation products by distillation, and the mixture separated by in vacuo distillation or by the separation of the ketone as oxime. Dodecanedioic acid may be prepared by the nitric acid oxidation of the separated cyclododecanol or of the oily residue from the process and the lactam of aminoundecanecarboxylic acid may be prepared from the cyclododecanone.
