titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to films and sheets, having a thin metal coating |
abstract | 930,062. Laminates; metal-coated sheets. MAY & BAKER Ltd. Oct. 7; 1959 [July 7, 1958], No. 21775/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXXVI] A process for providing a film or sheet having a continuous surface with a thin metal coating comprises forming a laminate of a base film or sheet (a) carrying a vacuum-deposited metal coating and forming a self-supporting film or sheet (b) having a continuous surface in direct contact with the metal under conditions adapted to cause cohesion between the metal coating and the surface, and removing the base (a)from the laminate to leave the metal coating on the film or sheet (b). In one embodiment the sheet (b) is applied to the coated base by spreading, casting or extrusion of a solution of the material. Base materials mentioned are polyamides and polyesters, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl acetals, e.g. polyvinyl formal, cellulose acetate and other unspecified cellulose esters, while sheet (b) materials referred to are polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride, respectively, polyvinyl alcohol, simple and mixed cellulose esters, e.g. acetates and acetate butyrates, and organic solvent-soluble and water-soluble cellulose ethers, e.g.ethyl, and methyl and hydroxyethyl cellulose, respectively. In another embodiment, the sheet (b) is a material to which the metal may be bonded by heat and pressure, e.g. the material may be one of the vinyl polymers or cellulose derivatives referred to above, or a cross-linked or cross - linkable resin, e.g. a polyester resin, phenol - formaldehyde or urea - formaldehyde resin. Alternatively, the sheet (b) may comprise a resin-bonded fibrous sheet. Metals mentioned are copper, aluminium, silver and zinc. Five examples are described. |
