titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to a process for curing epoxy resins
abstract An improvement in or modification of a process for curing an epoxy resin having an average number of epoxy groups per molecule of more than one, comprises curing the epoxy resin with at least one amino compound containing primary and/or secondary amino groups in the molecule in the presence of salicylic acid dissolved in an alcohol having a boiling range above 150 DEG C. or in the presence of lactic acid. Specified epoxy resins are the reaction products of epichlorohydrin or dichlorohydrin with polyhydric phenols, polyhydric alcohols or phenol-aldehyde condensates, many being specified. Reactive diluents containing one or more epoxy groups per molecule, e.g. glycidyl ethers of monohydric phenols or alcohols, g -butyrolactone and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether may be incorporated in the reaction mixture. Specified amino compounds are m-phenylene diamine, diamino diphenyl methane, diethylene triamine, aminopolyamides derived from aliphatic polyamines and polymerized fatty acids, polyamine derivatives of long chain fatty acids and adducts of amines and epoxidized oils or alkenes. Specified alcohols are tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, furfuryl alcohol, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and triethylene glycol monoethyl ether. Plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate may be present in the composition. Many examples are given.
