titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of linear polyamides of ยช -aminocarboxylic acids
abstract In a process for the manufacture of linear polyamides and copolyamides of b -amino-carboxylic acids, at least one b -lactam having a hydrogen atom attached to the nitrogen atom and having at least one hydrogen atom in the a -position to the carbonyl group is polymerized in an organic solvent that does not interrupt the anionic polymerization by liberating protons, in the presence of 0,001 to 0,02 mol. of at least one lactamate of a strong base per mol. of the b -lactam and 0,00005 to 0,006 mol. of an N-acyl derivative of a lactam per mol. of the b -lactam. Specified solvents are benzene, xylene, chlorobenzene, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide and tetrahydrofuran. The lactamates can be formed in situ from the lactam and sodium, sodium hydride, potassium hydride or lithium hydride. In the examples:-(1) and (2) b -methyl-b -butyrolactam; (3) b -methyl-b -butyrolactam and b -methyl-b -caprolactam and (4) b -methyl-b -butyrolactam, b -methyl-b -caprolactam and b -phenyl-propiolactam are polymerized in the presence of:- (1) and (2) dimethyl sulphoxide, potassium pyrrolidone and acetyl-b -methyl-b -butyrolactam; (3) dimethyl sulphoxide, lithium pyrrolidone and N-acetyl caprolactam and (4) dimethyl sulphoxide, potassium pyrrolidone and N-acetyl pyrrolidone. Specification 913,645 is referred to.
