titleOfInvention | Flameproofing of paper |
abstract | An aqueous composition for improving paper in respect of flame-retardance, bursting strength and resistance to fungi, rot, mildew &c. comprises (I) 10 to 30 parts by weight of tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride, (II) 2 to 10 parts by weight of triethanolamine, (III) 10 to 50 parts by weight of vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer latex, and (IV) enough water to give a content of 10 to 60% by weight of non-aqueous ingredients. The composition may also contain a urea-formaldehyde precondensate in amount up to 75 parts, but preferably of 35 to 55 parts by weight. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 740,269.ALSO:An aqueous composition for improving paper in respect of flame-retardance, bursting strength and resistance to fungi, rot, mildew &c. comprises (a) 10 to 30 parts by weight of tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride, (b) 2 to 10 parts by weight of triethanolamine, (c) 10 to 50 parts by weight of vinyl chloridevinylidene chloride copolymer latex, and (d) enough water to give a content of 10 to 60% by weight of non-aqueous ingredients. The composition may also contain a urea-formaldehyde precondensate in amount up to 75 parts, but preferably of 35 to 55 parts by weight. Paper may be treated by impregnating it with the composition, which may first be diluted, but not below 10% of non-aqueous ingredients, drying, e.g. at elevated temperature, and curing, e.g. at 120 DEG -160 DEG C. The Specification also describes for purposes of comparison a composition containing urea and trimethylol-melamine but no copolymer latex. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 740,269. |
