titleOfInvention | Lubricating oil compositions |
abstract | A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil, e.g. mineral oil, and minor proportions of (a) a polymeric nitrogen-containing detergent, and (b) a polyhydrocarbyl hydroxybenzyl compound having attached to the -CH2- group of the benzyl radical a polar substituent XY, X being -O-, -S-, or -S-S, and Y being hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl radical, or a polyhydrocarbyl hydroxybenzyl radical. Either additive may be present in proportions of 0,01 to 10%, preferably 0,5-6%, by weight of the whole composition. Additive (a) may contain nitrogen as amino or amido groups, or as part of a heterocyclic ring. Copolymers of nitrogen-containing monomers with one or more polymerizable unsaturated alcohols, acids, or esters are preferred. In the numerous additives (a) specified the nitrogen-containing monomer is a vinyl pyridine, a vinyl picoline, a vinyl quinoline, a vinyl pyrrolidone, or a vinylarylamine, typical examples being 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, and paraaminostyrene, others also being specified. The polymerizable unsaturated alcohols, acids, and esters are exemplified by stearyl and lauryl methacrylates, and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, others also being specified. A C1-4 alkyl methacrylate may additionally be used. Suitable copolymers are described in Specifications 726,785, 760,554, 818,254 and 842,010. Additive (b) preferably has no more than 20 carbon atoms in each of the hydrocarbyl groups, 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohols, mercaptans, sulphides, ethers and thioethers, particularly those in which the alkyl groups are tertiary and contain 3-8 carbon atoms being preferred. The hydrocarbyl radicals may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, tert-butyl, tert-amyl, hexyl, tert-octyl, palmityl, cyclobutyl, or cyclohexyl. Typical compounds are 3-ethyl-5-propyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, bis(3,5-ditert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)ether, bis(3-propyl-5-cyclohexyl-4-hydroxybenzyl) mono and disulphides, and 3,5-diisopropyl-4-hydroxybenzyl palmityl sulphide, many others being specified. The viscosity index of the base oil is preferably at least 80, especially 90 to 150, and the oil may be blended with minor proportions of bright stock, lard oil, castor oil, or synthetic lubricants, e.g. polyisobutylene. In an example, phenyl-a -napthylamine and diamyl dithiocarbamate are also present.ALSO:A copolymer of 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine and stearyl methacrylate was prepared by heating a mixture of the two monomers in a 50-50 mixture of benzene and a light mineral oil in the presence of di-tertiarybutylperoxide for 6 hours at 120 DEG C. The product had a M.W. of 200,000. A copolymer of stearyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and 2-methyl-5-vinyl-pyridine was prepared by heating a mixture of the monomers in a 50-50 mixture of benzene and a neutral petroleum oil in the presence of ditertiarybutylperoxide for 7 hour at 120 DEG C. The product had a M.W. of 600,000. The copolymers are used as lubricant additives. Specifications 726,785, 760,554, 818,254 and 842,010 are referred to. |
