titleOfInvention Hydroquinone phosphates
abstract The invention comprises hydroquinone phosphates of formula <FORM:0928163/IV(a)/1> where R is an orthophosphate (-OP(O) (OH)2) group or a hydroxyl group, at least one being orthophosphate, and n is an integer from 1 to 10, and salts of such compounds, specifically alkali and alkaline earth metal salts and ammonium salts. They may be prepared by treating a hydroquinone of formula <FORM:0928163/IV(a)/2> with a phosphorylating agent, e.g. POCI3. Inert solvents, organic bases and/or an inert atmosphere may be used. The starting material hydroquinones may be obtained by the process of Specification 928,161, or, where n is 5 to 10, by conventional reduction of the corresponding naturally occurring quinones (Coenzyme Q's).
