abstract | The invention comprises compounds of the formula:- <FORM:0926532/IV(a)/1> (wherein R is hydrogen or an acyloxy radical derived from a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid of less than 12 carbon atoms) and a step in the process of preparing these compounds consisting of reacting an estratriene derivative of the formula:- <FORM:0926532/IV(a)/2> (wherein R is the same as above) with hypochlorous acid or a substance capable of forming hypochlorous acid in acid medium, particularly N-chlorosuccinimide in admixture with dimethyl formamide and aqueous acetic acid or an alkali or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite. The invention is illustrated by 14 examples. |
