titleOfInvention Method of producing nutritional supplements from tannery fleshings, hide trim and the like
abstract A supplement for mixing with animal feed such as grain or oil-cake is made by acid hydrolysis of animal by-products, exemplified by tannery green fleshings of soaked hides, fleshings of limed hides and hide trimmings, slaughterhouse offal, and poultry viscera and trimmings, at a temperature above the boilingpoint of water at atmospheric pressure, the fat being liquefied and the protein being converted to polypeptides, separating the liquid from residual solids, neutralizing the liquid, and removing part of the water from the resulting protein-fat emulsion to form a paste. The by-product may contain bone. Acids used for the hydrolysis may be hydrochloric and phosphoric acids. Neutralization may be by sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide or calcium carbonate. Emulsion formation may be assisted by glyceryl monostearate. Butylated hydroxy anisole, butylated hydroxy toluene, ethyl or propyl gallate, lecithin, or combinations of these may be added to prevent rancidity. The process may be continuous.
