abstract | Ethylene copolymers are made by copolymerizing ethylene with at least one alphamonoolefin and with or without at least one non-conjugated hydrocarbon diene, in a methylene chloride, ethyl chloride, or 1,2-dichloroethane reaction medium, at a temperature below the boiling point at atmospheric pressure of the reaction medium or 50 DEG C., whichever is the lower in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a transition metal compound and an organometallic compound. The preferred catalyst system is formed from vanadium tris(acetylacetonate), vanadium oxybis(acetylacetonate), vanadium oxytris(isobutoxide), or vanadium oxytrichloride, and diisobutylaluminium chloride, or isobutylaluminium dichloride, or triisobutylaluminium, or diisobutylaluminium bromide, or isobutylaluminium dibromide, or the reaction product of 0,5 to 2,0 moles of aluminium bromide with 1,0 mole of triisobutyl aluminium, or the reaction product of 0,5 to 2,0 moles of aluminium chloride with 1,0 mole of triisobutylaluminium, and the relative proportions of the components are such that the molar ratio of isobutyl radicals to vanadium atoms is at least 6:1. The process may be effected continuously, and the monomers may be purified before use. The copolymers may be recovered by conventional techniques. The Specification contains long lists of suitable comonomers. Exemplified copolymers are ethylene/propylene, ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene, ethylene/1-hexene/1,4-hexadiene, ethylene/propylene/5-methylene norbornene, ethylene/propylene/5-methylene-2-norbornene, ethylene/4-methyl-1-pentene, ethylene/propylene/2-methyl-2,5-norbornadiene, ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene, and ethylene/propylene. The catalyst used in the process may be preformed or formed in situ. The process may be effected continuously. The monomers may be purified before use. |
