titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of polycarbonates
abstract In the manufacture of polycarbonates by reacting phosgene with a di-(monohydroxyaryl) alkane in an aqueous alkaline medium containing an inert organic solvent for the polycarbonate resin formed, there is used as a catalyst a quarternary phosphonium compound, e.g. a quarternary phosphonium hydroxide, halide, carbonate or bicarbonate. The groups attached to the phosphorus atom may be alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl groups and these groups may contain halo- or nitro-substituents. The reaction mixture may also contain (a) a chain-stopper, e.g. phenol, tertiary butyl phenol, chlorophenol, nonyl alcohol or butyl alcohol or (b) an antioxidant or an additive to prevent decomposition of phosgene or to react preferentially with phosgene decomposition products, e.g. sodium dithionite, potassium bisulphite or carbon monoxide. Examples describe the manufacture of bis-phenol A polycarbonate.
