A method of regenerating an etching liquid containing citric acid, and which may also contain glycolic acid, which is being used to treat a metal which is predominantly iron, comprises contacting the liquid with a cationic ion exchange resin, such as a sulphonated polystyrene type or carboxylic acid type resin, to remove ferrous ion and increase the relative proportion of ferric ion and ferric citrate chelate ion. Specification 793,190 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,191,853, 2,319,359, 2,333,754, 2,340,110, 2,340,111 and 2,518,420 are referred to.
