titleOfInvention | Copolymers of compounds containing conjugated double bonds |
abstract | New copolymers are those of unsaturated compounds of formula R1R2C=CR3-CR4=CR5R6(A) where R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are the same or different and represent hydrogen or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group and R6 is a carboxyl group, a salt or an ester with a saturated alcohol thereof, an amide or substituted amide or cyano-derivative thereof with a different unsaturated compound of the formula RIRIIC=CRIIIRIV (B) where RI, RII and RIII are the same or different and represent hydrogen or an alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aryl group and RIV is R6. Specified compounds (A) are 1-carboxy-butadiene, 4-methyl-1-carboxy-butadiene (sorbic acid), 4-phenyl-1-carboxy-butadiene and their lower alkyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl esters, their nitriles, amides substituted amides, and metal or tetra-alkyl ammonium salts, while specified compounds (B) are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, cinnamic, alpha-phenylacrylic acids and their allyl, cyclohexyl and benzyl esters, their nitriles, amides, substituted amides and their metal and tetraalkyl ammonium salts. The copolymers are prepared by polymerization under a protective atmosphere in the presence of an anionic catalyst comprising at least one of the following compounds of metals of Group I, II or III: alkyl or aryl compounds, alkyl hydrides, alkyl halides, compounds of formulae MpIMII[N(R1R2)]mXn where R1 and R2 are the same or different alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or alkylaryl groups or can form a heterocyclic ring with the nitrogen atom, MI is an alkali metal, MII are metal of Group I, II or III, X is hydrogen or halogen, p is 0 or a whole member and m+n is the sum of the valencies of MI and MII or the etherates of such compounds. Specified catalysts are n-butyl and isoamyl lithium, and phenyl magnesium bromide. Specified copolymers are methyl sorbate with (1) n-butyl sorbate, (2) methyl acrylate, (3) methyl methacrylate, (4) acrylonitrile, (5) sorbonitrile, (6) N-diethyl sorbyl amide, (7) butyl-b -styryl-acrylate plus methyl methacrylate and (8) the methyl ester of beta-vinyl acrylic acid; n-butyl sorbate with n-butyl-beta-styryl-acrylate; methyl acrylate with (a) the methyl ester of 5-methyl sorbate, (b) N-diethyl sorbyl amide and (c) sorbonitrile; and the methyl ester of beta-vinyl-acrylic acid and methyl methacrylate. Solvents, e.g. aromatic hydrocarbons may be present. |
