titleOfInvention Vulcanisation process
abstract Natural or synthetic rubbers are vulcanized in the presence of a bis-phenol resin and a halide of a metal of Group IIa, IIIa or IIIb, or a heavy metal halide, the halide being formed in situ in the vulcanization mixture, before the addition of the bis-phenol resin, by reaction of a halogen donor with a compound of the metal. Specified rubbers are butyl, polybutadiene, polyisoprene and copolymers of butadiene and/or isoprene with acrylonitrile or styrene. Fillers may also be present. Specified halogen donors are vinyl or vinylidene chloride polymers or copolymers, polychloroprene, chlorinated or brominated butyl rubber, halogenated or chlorosulphonated polyolefins, a colloidal mixture of polyvinyl chloride with a butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer, a chlorinated paraffinic hydrocarbon, halogen containing factice, benzyl chloride, benzyl dichloride, heptachlorocyclohexane, lauroyl chloride, oleyl chloride, stearyl chloride, benzoyl chloride, N-bromosuccinimide and N-bromophthalimide. The metal compound may be an oxide or salt of a weak acid, e.g. formic, acetic, lauric, stearic, benzoic, chromic or carbonic acid especially with zinc, aluminium or iron. The bis-phenol may be plasticized by heating to above 70 DEG C. with a hydroxy fatty acid of more than 10 carbon atoms or a glyceride thereof, a fatty oil, a neutral reacting resin or an ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a mixture of dicarbonylic acids and fatty or resin acids. Solvents, e.g. mineral oil, polyethers, polyglycols, polyhydric alcohols and esters of polybasic carboxylic acids may also be present. Specification 409,397 also is referred to.
