abstract A soil conditioner or fertilizer comprises wood waste which has been treated with 19% or more of alkali and thereafter with 40% or more of an acid or acid. In examples, sawdust is treated in the cold with 20% caustic soda or caustic potash and after allowing to stand for 30-60 minutes in the air is further treated with sulphuric acid optionally with the addition of phosphoric acid. The product after removal of liquid may applied directly to the soil at a rate of 5 tons per acre or it may be converted to a fertilizer by the addition of paunch liquors, sewage effluents, magnesium sulphate, manganese sulphate, zinc sulphate, borox copper sulphate, nickel sulphate, cobalt sulphate sodium salts of molybdenum, ammonium sulphate, nouriate of potash, phosphoric acid or chemical insect or parasite repellents.
