titleOfInvention | A process for the production of nitriles |
abstract | Nitriles are prepared by reacting an aldehyde, or an alcohol containing one or more -CH2OH groups capable of being oxidised to an aldehyde group during the reaction, in a liquid alkaline medium with ammonia in the presence of oxygen or a molecular oxygencontaining gas and a copper compound as catalyst. Cupric chloride, bromide, acetate, nitrate, sulphate, oxide and hydroxide are suitable copper compounds. Temperatures may range from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C. The process may be used for the preparation of benzonitrile from benzaldehyde; 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile from 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde; 2,6-dibromobenzo-nitrile from 2,6-dibromobenzaldehyde; 2-bromo-6-chlorobenzonitrile from 2-bromo-6-chlorobenzaldehyde; para-methoxybenzonitrile from anisaldehyde; 3,4-methylenedioxybenzonitrile from piperonal; oenanthonitrile from oenanthaldehyde; benzonitrile from benzyl alcohol; 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile from 2,6-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, ortho- and meta-nitro-benzonitrile from ortho- and meta-nitro-benzaldehyde and 2-cyanofuran from furfural. Specification 700,184 is referred to. |
