titleOfInvention New carbonyl compounds and their precursors and the production thereof
abstract The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:0920914/IV(a)/1> where Q is a carbonyl, hydroxymethylene, acyloxymethylene or ketalised (including cyclically ketalised) carbonyl group, R is alkyl, R5 is -OH, -OR6 or (except when Q is a carbonyl group) -R6, R6 being alkyl, R1 and R2 are alkyl and n is 1 or 2. Compounds of formula I in which R5 is alkyl may be prepared by reacting an acid <FORM:0920914/IV(a)/2> or a halide thereof with a metal alkyl. An acid of formula II may be obtained by hydrolysis of an ester of formula I where R5 = -OR6. A carbonyl group Q of such an ester may be ketalised with a mono- or di-hydric alcohol or a cyclic ketalising agent, e.g. 2ethylenedioxybutane, in the presence of ptoluenesulphonic acid, or may be hydrogenated to a hydroxymethylene group which may then be acylated. A keto ester of formula I wherein Q is carbonyl and R5 = -OR6 may be obtained by reacting an acid halide <FORM:0920914/IV(a)/3> where X is halogen with a metal alkyl. The acid halide III may be obtained by thionyl chloride on a monoester <FORM:0920914/IV(a)/4> obtainable by partial hydrolysis, e.g. with alcoholic KOH at normal temperatures, of the diester. The semicarbazone of methyl 2,2-dimethyl5-ketoheptanoate is prepared in an example. The Provisional Specification omits the limitation that R5 is not alkyl when Q is a carbonyl group in compounds of formula I.
