abstract | Three-component catalysts for the polymerization of a -olefinic hydrocarbons comprise (1) an aluminium compound of the formula RAlX2, where R is an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical containing 1-12 carbon atoms and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, (2) a halide, alkoxyhalide, acetylacetonate or alkoxide of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, chromium or molybdenum, and (3) a compound of any of the four general formulae <FORM:0920513/IV(a)/1> and <FORM:0920513/IV(a)/2> wherein Y1 is an alkoxy group of 1-8 carbon atoms, Y2 is an alkoxy or alkylamino group of 1-8 carbon atoms and the Y's may be the same or different, Y3 is an amino or an alkylamino group of 1-8 carbon atoms, Y4 is an amino or an alkoxy or alkylamino group of 1-8 carbon atoms, R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-8 carbon atoms and n is 1-4. Specified components (3) are tris-N,N-dimethylphosphoramide, triethyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, triethyl phosphite, tributyl phosphite, N,N-dimethylacetamide, dimethylformamide, adipamide and mixed phosphate amide-esters, e.g. C2H5OP(O)(NEt2)2. Specified olefines which may be polymerized include ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, styrene, 3-methyl-1-butene, 4-methyl-1-pentene, 1-pentene, vinylcyclohexane, allylbenzene, butadiene, isoprene and 1,3-pentadiene and mixtures of ethylene and propylene. Polymerization is preferably effected in the presence of an inert organic diluent, e.g. an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or alkylaromatic hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon, many such diluents being specified. Hydrogen may be introduced into the polymerization reaction to alter the molecular weight of the polymers. The polymers are isolated using the common extraction and washing procedures. |
