titleOfInvention | Process for the manufacture of dye receptive acrylic fibers |
abstract | Dye-receptive polymers are formed by the copolymerization of acrylonitrile and ringsubstituted or unsubstituted N-vinyl-3-morpholinone, optionally together with other monomers, in an aqueous zinc chloride solution and coagulation of the copolymer as yarn or film in the solution. Substituted N-vinyl-3-morpholinones specified are the 2-, 5-, and 6- methyl, ethyl, butyl, chloromethyl, and bromethyl derivatives. Other monomers specified are vinyl acetic acid, acetate, propionate, and butyrate; 2-vinyl and 2-vinyl-5-ethyl pyridine; methyl, ethyl, and dimethylaminoethyl acrylate; acrylic, itaconic, and fumaric acid; ethylene, allyl, styrene, and vinyl toluene sulphonic acid and alkali metal salts; and allyl alcohol, butadiene, methacrylamide, methacrylonitrile, and fumaronitrile. The copolymer may be derived from 80-90% of acrylonitrile and 1-20% of N-vinyl-3-morpholinone. The solution may contain 55-65% of zinc chloride. Polymerization may be carried out at 20 DEG -100 DEG C. and in the presence of a catalyst. Catalysts specified are ammonium and potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, and azo-bis-isobutyronitrile. Polymerization may 50-80% complete, unreacted or partially reacted volatile constituents being removed before coagulation. The solution may contain 2-20% of the resulting copolymer. The coagulating solution may be water or 25-50% aqueous zinc chloride solution. Examples are given. |
