abstract The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0917078/IV (b)/1> (wherein Ar is a phenyl, halophenyl, methoxyphenyl or thienyl radical; Ar1 is a phenyl, halophenyl or tolyl radical; alk is an alkylene radical of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 and R3 are each a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, R2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical and n is zero or 1) and their acidaddition and quaternary ammonium salts. They may be prepared from the appropriate aroyl alkyl halide Ar-CO-alk-halogen and the appropriate piperidine of the formula <FORM:0917078/IV (b)/2> itself prepared by reacting an amine of the formula <FORM:0917078/IV (b)/3> with the appropriate alkyl chloroformate, an anhydride of the appropriate acid or trichloroacetaldehyde and then debenzylating the resulting compound. Examples are given and a list of salt-forming organic and inorganic acids and quaternising agents (including ethylene chlorohydrin) is provided. The Provisional Specification describes compounds of the formula <FORM:0917078/IV (b)/4> wherein Y is phenyl, lower alkyl-phenyl, halophenyl, alkoxyphenyl or thienyl, Z is phenyl, lower alkyl-phenyl, halophenyl or alkoxyphenyl, B is lower alkylene, Alk is an alkylene chain of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and R2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy. It also describes the preparation of gamma-chloro-4-fluoro-butyrophenone from gamma-chloro-butyryl chloride and 4-fluoro-benzene.
