titleOfInvention Process for treating animal skin
abstract Polymerization of monomers, with which an animal skin has been treated after milling in a dispersion comprising a non-ionic emulsifier and at least one non-polymerizable water-immiscible liquid organic compound, is effected with the aid of a catalyst which is preferably a redox system consisting of peroxidic and reducing constituents. Specified monomers are vinyl acetate, vinyl toluene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and their methyl, ethyl, butyl and dodecyl esters, styrene and unsaturated polyesters to be used as comonomers with the aformentioned monomers. The process is applied to a freshly butchered skin which has not been unhaired or a wet unhaired hide. Components specified in examples are: maleic acid/phthalic acid/propylene glycol polyesters, styrene, methyl and decyl-octyl methacrylates, oleic acid/ethylene oxide emulsifier, benzoyl peroxide/dibutyl phthalate and dimethyl-p-toluidine.
