titleOfInvention Indicators, counters and other instruments operated by the aid of beta or gamma radiation
abstract 914,181. Liquid-level indicating devices. BURNDEPT Ltd. July 15, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 24510/59. Class 123 (1). [Also in Groups XVII and XIX] In a liquid-level indicating device a Geiger counter tube 1 is placed opposite a source of gamma or beta radiation, e.g. strontium 90, located at the level to be indicated so that when a liquid comes between the source and the tube 1 the change in radiation through the liquid is detected by an indicating circuit. As shown, a voltage of 400 V. is supplied to the tube 1 through a ballast resistor 6 and smoothing circuit connected to the secondary winding 5 of a transformer 3 having another secondary winding 7 connected to a full-wave rectifier 8 supplying negative voltages of - 12 V. and - 20 V. respectively to transistor and relay circuits 11-15 and 24, 19, 23. Voltage pulses from the tube 1 are applied through a capacitor 9, to the transistors 11, 12 of a pulse-shaping circuit which is connected to an emitter follower stage 13 leading, through a pulse pre-setting variable resistance 14 and a capacitor, to an integrating circuit comprising a transistor 15, a rectifier 16, a capacitor 17, and a variable resistance 18 for fine adjustment of the critical pulse frequency. The voltage built up in the capacitor 17 is used to bias the bases of parallel transistors 19, 23, the emitters of which are connected to the junction of Zener diode and a resistor 22. The collector circuits of the transistors 19, 23 include the winding 24 of a relay which operates contacts 25 of an indicating, or controlling circuit. The device may be applied to the detecting of faulty material levels in cartons and the ejecting of the defective packages. It may also count the packages.
