titleOfInvention Lithographic printing plates
abstract 913,591. Lithographic printing-plate production by silver-salt diffusion processes. GEVAERT PHOTO-PRODUCTEN N.V. Dec. 11, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 33431/57. Class 98 (2). The positive image transfer in this process is made on to metal plate not having specially provided nuclei but which metal takes actively part in electrolytic transfer and reduction of the silver salt, and an after-treatment is given to increase the hydrophility of the metal and the oleophility of the transferred silver image. Metals specified are aluminium, zinc, magnesium, copper, lead or alloys thereof; preferably brushed aluminium is used, the negative material is silver chloride in gelatine of medium hardness, and wetting and sequestering agents, of which many are specified, are used in the transfer-developer. The after-treatment is described as with a solution which contains a polymeric substance such as gum arabic or carboxymethyl cellulose, the effect of which can be increased by addition of phosphoric acid and enhanced by incorporation of quaternary ammonium compounds or mercapto compounds. In an example the brushed aluminium sheet and the exposed negative are treated with a specified transfer developer in an apparatus in which the former takes a shorter way than the latter before reaching rubber rollers, then the plate is rubbed with an after-treatment solution including sodium phosphate, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and formaldehyde in addition to the carboxymethylcellulose and phosphoric acid as indicated above, to result in a printing-plate ready for use. The Provisional Specification states that the power of the silver image to absorb ink is improved by treatment with certain complex iodides. Specification 614,155 is referred to.
