titleOfInvention Esters of diboronic acids
abstract Fibre-forming resins are made by heating bis (1:1:1-trimethylolpropane) p-phenylenediboronate with a di-isocyanate such as 4,41-di-isocyanatodiphenylmethane or 2,4-di-isocyanatotoluene in xylene under reflux conditions. Polymeric resins are obtained when bis (triethanolamine) tetramethylenediboronate is heated with a di-isocyanate or dimethyl terephthalate in the presence of zinc acetate and antimony trioxide. A brittle thermosetting resin is obtained by heating bis (tris-(hydroxymethyl) phosphine oxide)-p-phenylenediboronate with urea. Specification 864,473 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds having the general formula <FORM:0913385/IV (b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom, a methyl group or an ethyl group, R1 is a polymethylene group having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms, a p-phenylene group or an alkyl substituted p-phenylene group and Z is selected from divalent groups having one of the formulae <FORM:0913385/IV (b)/2> and <FORM:0913385/IV (b)/3> when R is a hydrogen atom and is <FORM:0913385/IV (b)/4> when R is a methyl or ethyl group, R2 being an alkyl or aryl group or an alkyl or aryl group having a halogen or an alkoxy or an alkenyloxy substituent. The novel compounds may be made by heating a diboronic acid under reflux conditions with a trihydroxy compound of the formula Z(CRHOH)2 in a hydrocarbon solvent, the water being removed by azeotropic distillation. Alternatively, an ester, such as the tetrabutyl ester, of a diboronic acid is heated with the trihydroxy compound and the alcohol, e.g. butanol, removed by distillation. In a further method, the acid and trihydroxy compound are heated in an alcohol and the product is crystallised from the solution. Examples describe the preparation of bis(1 : 1 : 1 - trimethylolpropane)p phenylenediboronate, bis(triethanolamine)tetramethylenediboronate, bis(triethanolamine)p - phenylenediboronate, bis(1 : 1 : 1 - trimethylolethane)pphenylenediboronate, bis(tri-2-propanolamine) tetramethylenediboronate, bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine oxide)p - phenylenediboronate, bis(1 : 1 : 1 - trimethylol-2-chloroethane)-pphenylenediboronate, bis(allyloxymethyltrimethylolmethane)p-phenylenediboronate, and bis (triethanolamine) decamethylenediboronate. Specification 864,473 is referred to.
