abstract Polyoxymethylene is photostabilized by adding a cinnamonitrile of formula <FORM:0912033/IV(a)/1> where R1 and R2 are each either an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group, a cyclohexyl group, a hydrogen atom or a chlorine atom and X is either a cyano group, a carboalkoxy group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a carboxamide group, a carboxamide group substituted with at least one alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a carboxamide groups substituted with a phenyl group. Alpha-carbethoxy beta-phenyl cinnamonitrile, beta-phenyl alpha cyano cinnamonitrile, p-methoxy [beta-(p-methoxy phenyl)]alpha-carbethoxy-cinnamonitrile, and beta(parachlorophenyl)alpha-carbethoxy-cinnamonitrile are given in examples. Pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide, polyamides and antioxidants, e.g. 4,41-butylidene bis(3-methyl-6-tertiary-butyl phenol) may also be present.
