titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of primary phosphines
abstract Primary alkyl-, aralkyl- and cycloalkylphosphines and alkylene diprimary phosphines are prepared by reacting exothermically in an inert gaseous atmosphere a melt of a complex compound of general formula AlX3.PH3, where AlX3 is an aluminium halide acting as a Lewis acid, with appropriate mono- or dihalogenated hydrocarbons in which the halogen is bound to an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic carbon atom. Preferably the halocarbon is added to the melt at a rate such that the heat of reaction maintains the liquid phase, and the primary phosphine is recovered from the reaction products after hydrolytic decomposition. Reaction temperatures of 80 DEG -130 DEG C. are mentioned but the reaction may be continued at 50 DEG -60 DEG C. once it has started. Solvents may be present. Examples describe the preparation of n-alkyl phosphines containing 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 carbon atoms, of t-butyl, cyclopentyl and cyclohexyl phosphines and of 1,10-decamethylene diphosphine. Some di-n-butyl phosphine is obtained in Example 1.
