titleOfInvention Improved gramophone records
abstract Gramophone records moulded from a material comprising a vinyl chloride polymer are coated with at least one quaternary pyridinium salt in which the substituent on the nitrogen atom is an organic group consisting essentially of carbon and hydrogen atoms and containing at least 7 carbon atoms and in which the hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon atoms of the pyridine ring may or may not be substituted by alkyl groups. The pyridinium salt may be applied to the surface of the record as a solution or dispersion by spraying, brushing or wiping. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The pyridinium salt may be decyl, undecyl, cetyl, octadecyloxymethylene or stearamido-methyl methyl pyridinium chloride; dodecyl, cetyl, octadecyl or tetradecyl pyridinium bromide; cetyl pyridinium iodide; dodecyl pyridinium sulphate or tetradecyl picolinium salts. In Example 3 a record moulded from a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer is sprayed with an aqueous solution of tetradecyl pyridinium bromide. Reference is made in the Provisional Specification to other polymers, e.g. polymethylene terephthalate and polyesteramides, and other articles, e.g. conveyer belts.ALSO:Gramophone records are moulded from compositions comprising a vinyl chloride polymer and at least one quaternary pyridinium salt in which the substituent on the nitrogen atom is an organic group consisting essentially of carbon and hydrogen atoms and containing at least 7 carbon atoms and in which the hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon atoms of the pyridine ring may or may not be substituted by alkyl groups. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. The quaternary pyridinium salt may be decyl, undecyl, cetyl, octadecyloxymethylene or stearamido methyl pyridinium chloride; dodecyl, cetyl, octadecyl or tetradecyl pyridinium bromide; cetyl pyridinium iodide; dodecyl pyridinium sulphate or tetradecyl picolinium salts. The compositions may also comprise stabilizers, e.g. barium/cadmium laurate and dibasic lead stearate, and fillers, e.g. carbon black. Reference is made in the Provisional Specification to other polymers, such as polymethylene terephthalate and polyesteramides, and other articles, such as conveyer belts.
