titleOfInvention | Method of and apparatus for analysis of fluids |
abstract | <PICT:0909415/III/1> A liquid is continuously treated for analysis with respect to a substance which can be evolved from the liquid in gaseous form or is capable of evolving a gas, by introducing a stream of gasevolving liquid reagent into a stream of said liquid, passing the resultant stream to a gas/liquid separator and further-treating at least a part of the separated gas stream for analysis. The invention also comprises an apparatus comprising a conduit (20, 28) and means to transmit the liquid to be tested and the reagent liquid to said conduit (flexible tubes 10, 14 and associated pump 12), a gas/liquid separator (30) in communication therewith and apparatus for further treatment connected to the gas outlet of the separator. The numerals relate to Fig. 1 in which carbon dioxide, carbonate or bicarbonate-containing liquid is introduced into tube 10, lactic acid into tube 14 and an inert gas, e.g. air, into line 16, to produce a segmented stream. The air is first purified from CO2 with caustic soda in vessel 22. After reaction in coil 20 the inert gas containing CO2 is drawn from separator 30 into line 44 and introduced into a stream of colour reagent (carbonate-bicarbonate buffered phenolphthalein in methyl alcohol containing capryl alcohol as antifoaming agent) from vessel 49. The reagent is segmented but mixing takes place in coil 48 and the liquid segments are consolidated at 52 before passage into a recording colorimeter 54, 58. The estimation of carbon dioxide in blood plasma and from urea is also mentioned and the invention may be applied to determine water hardness due to carbonates and to monitor and control water-treating columns. |
