titleOfInvention | Corrosion protection in water systems |
abstract | 909,218. Preventing corrosion. NAPIER & SON Ltd., D., and PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. July 20, 1961 [Aug. 5, 1960], No. 27290/60. Class 123 (1). A method of protecting from corrosion ferrous metal in contact with water which is particularly applicable to water systems such as engine-cooling or domestic water systems consists of introducing into the water an anion exchange resin loaded with a corrosion inhibiting anion, particularly a phosphate or chromate anion. Anion in the water which may cause corrosion, e.g. chloride ions, replace the phosphate or chromate anion which are released into the water and exert a corrosion inhibiting effect. Where the anion is that of a phosphate the water is preferably softened to avoid precipitation of calcium phosphate. The resin may be used in an acid phosphate form and preferably in a mono-substituted orthophosphate form. An example is given of the corrosion inhibiting effect of a weakly basic polystyrene bead resin of chloride form treated by percolation with sodium dihydrogen phosphate and suspended in a porous polyvinylchloride bag in water in a water-circulating system. |
