titleOfInvention Resinous products
abstract Resins are produced by reacting acrolein and/or methacrolein in the presence of an alkali metal nitrite with one or more resinforming components selected from: (i) compounds containing at least two free hydroxyl groups and at least 3 carbon atoms, at least one carbon atom being directly bonded to at least two other carbon atoms, and (ii) compounds containing at least two epoxy groups. The resin-forming components may further contain one or more additional resin-formers selected from: (a) compounds containing at least two hydroxy groups not falling within the definition of (i) above, (b) compounds containing one epoxy group, and (c) polymerizable vinyl and allyl compounds. Specified resinforming components of the above classes are (i) propylene glycol, butanediol, pentanediol, diphenylolpropane and bis(ethylene glycol) ether, propylene oxides having two terminal -OH groups, esters of adipic acid with glycerol, trimethylolpropane and diphenylolpropane, esters of maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citraconic acids with ethylene, diethylene, and triethylene glycols and resorcinol and pentaerythritol diallyl ether; (ii) the diglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, butanediol and hexanediol, diglycidyl sebacate, 3,4-epoxycyclohexylethylene oxide, 3,4-epoxy-6-methyl-cyclohexylmethyl-31,41 -epoxy-61-methylcarboxylate, ethylene-bis-(2,3-epoxypropyl carbonate), butadiene dioxide, dibenzyl-urea-diglycidyl ether, epoxy resins obtained by reacting bisphenols, e.g. diphenylolpropane, with epichlorohydrin, and polyglycidyl ethers; (a) ethylene, diethylene and triethylene glycols; (b) epichlorohydrin, ethylene and propylene oxides, phenyl, alkyl phenyl, lauryl and allyl glycidyl ethers, glycidyl stearate, myristate and oleate, epoxidized fatty acid esters and glycidyl aldehyde; and (c) vinyl propionate and butyrate, vinyl pyrrolidone, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene and mixtures of styrene with vinyl toluene and dimethyl maleate, ethylene glycol allyl ether, diallyl phthalate and pentaerythritol diallyl ether. In a preferred mode of operation the acrolein or methacrolein is reacted with one or more of resin-forming components (i), (ii) and (iii) in the presence of an alkali nitrite, unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, and methanol are added to the mixture and the methanol is then removed to leave a solution of resin in monomer which is hardened by the addition of an organic peroxide, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, methyl isobutyl ketone peroxide or cyclohexanone peroxide, and an accelerator, e.g. cobalt naphthenate, cobalt octoate, dimethyl aniline or dodecyl mercaptan. Also added at this last stage may be a small quantity of divinyl benzene. Alternatively, unsaturated monomer may be included in the first reaction stage and the resulting product dissolved in a different monomer for further reaction, e.g. ethylene glycol allyl ether, pentaerythritol diallyl ether or vinyl pyrrolidone are included in the first stage and the resulting products are then dissolved in styrene or a styrene-dimethyl maleate mixture. Also present in the compositions may be colouring matter and fillers, e.g. chalk, lime, quartz, silicon carbide and kaolin. The resinous products may be used in the production of moulded bodies and coatings, e.g. coatings on wood and glass. Specification 849,401 also is referred to.
