titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to steroids and the manufacture thereof
abstract The invention comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0907814/IV (b)/1> wherein X11 is chlorine or fluorine, X111 is bromine, iodine, chlorine, fluorine, or hydrogen and R2 is a b -hydroxy or keto group, and the preparation thereof by treating the corresponding 21-iodo compound in which R2 is b -OH with a reducing agent and then, if desired, oxidising the compound so obtained to produce the corresponding 11-keto derivative. As reducing agent sodium thiosulphate or sodium or potassium bisulphite may be used. Oxidation may be effected with CrO3, N-bromoacetamide or N-bromosuccinimide.ALSO:Anti-inflammatory compositions comprising compounds having the formula <FORM:0907814/VI/1> wherein X11 is chlorine or fluorine, X111 is bromine, iodine, chlorine, fluorine or hydrogen and R2 is a b -hydroxy or keto group, with or without the addition of an antibiotic (e.g. neomycin sulphate, novobiocin, bacitracin, circulin, polymyxin B sulphate, gramicidin, streptomycin sulphate, dihydrostreptomycin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, tetracycline or chloramphenicol) and/or a sulphonamide, and a pharmaceutical diluent, are employed orally, parenterally or topically in tablets, ointments, lotions, jellies, creams, suppositories, bougies or aqueous suspensions. An ointment exemplified, incorporating 2-fluoro-11b ,17a -dihydroxy - 4 - pregnene - 3,20 - dione may contain in addition neomycin sulphate.
