titleOfInvention Polymerizable compositions
abstract A polymerizable composition comprises (a) one or more polymerizable unsaturated monomers (other than glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate) each free from reactive hydrogen and each consisting of no more than carbon, hydrogen and oxygen or a mixture of such monomer(s) with one or more unsaturated polyesters (b) at least one of glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate and hydroxy alkyl acrylates or methacrylates in which the alkyl group has from two to four carbon atoms, (c) acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and (d) at least one alkenyl tri-(alkoxy)-silane in which the alkenyl group has two to four carbon atoms and in which the alkoxy group contains one to four carbon atoms, component (a) being such that when polymerized alone, it gives a hard rigid resin and when polymerized with (b), (c) and (d) a homogeneous product results, and components (a), (b), (c) and (d) are present in the following percentage proportions based on the total weight of the polymers viz. (a) 98 to 86, (b) 0,5 to 5, (c) 1 to 4 and (d) 0,5 to 5. Component (a) is preferably methyl methacrylate which may be used in conjunction with methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, methacrylate or ethacrylate, styrene, methylstyrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl naphthalene, the lower alkyl esters of itaconic acid and fumaric acid, vinyl acetate and vinyl stearate. Specified polyesters are those prepared by the interaction of a saturated dicarboxylic acid, a monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and a glycol or a mixture of glycols. Polymerization inhibitors may be present, and specified are t-butyl catechol, hydroquinone, monoethylether of hydroquinone and 2,5-di-t-butylhydroquinone. The composition may be polymerized using as catalyst peroxides, persalts, azo catalysts or ultra-violet light with the usual catalysts. The viscosity of the polymerizable composition may be increased by addition of preformed polymers of alkyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic esters or their copolymers.
