titleOfInvention | Tertiary alcohols and process for their manufacture |
abstract | The invention comprises t-alcohols of the formula: <FORM:0907070/IV (b)/1> in which R stands for a polyalkylmethyl radical which contains at least 3 carbon atoms and Ph represents a phenyl radical, which contains an alkoxy group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms in the 3-position and/or the 4-position and salts and N-oxides thereof, by reacting a ketone of the formula: <FORM:0907070/IV (b)/2> with an organo-metallic reagent of the formula: <FORM:0907070/IV (b)/3> wherein one of the radicals X, Y and Z stands for the radical Ph. another for R, and the third for the radical <PICT:0907070/IV (b)/1> the radicals Ph and R having the previously given meanings and M\sL represents the positively charged ion of a metal of the Ia Group of the Periodic table or the positively charged ion of the formula Met-Hal\sL, in which Met represents a bivalent metal of the II Group of the Periodic table and Hal stands for halogen, and if desired, converting a resulting salt into the free base and/or converting a free base into a salt thereof and/or separating the resulting mixture of isomers into individual isomers. The preparation of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methyl-1-(3-pyridyl) propanol is described. Pharmaceutical compositions having an adrenal inhibiting effect and incorporating the above compounds are administered enterally or parenterally as capsules, tablets, dragees, solutions, suspensions and emulsions. 4-Methoxy-phenyl 3-pyridyl ketone is obtained by treating nicotinic acid with thionyl chloride followed by condensation of the product with anisole. |
