titleOfInvention Polymerization method and product
abstract Polyisoprene which has a substantially completely trans-1,4-configuration is made by polymerizing isoprene in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) vanadium trichloride (2) an organoaluminium compound of the formula AlR3 where R is a hydrocarbon radical, and (3) a compound of the formula TiX4 or R1TiX3 where X is Cl, Br, I, or OR11, and R1 and R11 are hydrocarbon radicals, and in which the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to vanadium trichloride ranges from 2:1 to 200:1, and the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to the titanium compound ranges from 2:1 to 80:1. The vanadium trichloride is preferably dispersed on the surface of a finely divided inert solid carrier such as clay, silica, alumina, magnesia, or titania. The R radical in component (2) may be methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, hexyl, dodecyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, tolyl or phenylethyl. Component (3) of the catalyst is preferably tetra(2-ethylbutyl)titanate. The polymerization is generally effected in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent, and the polymer recovered by conventional techniques. Specification 877,371 is referred to.
