titleOfInvention Method of extracting polysaccharides
abstract A method of extracting polysaccharides comprises subjecting guar seeds to the action of an aqueous caustic alkali at a temperature of 60 DEG -120 DEG C. in the presence of an agent for retarding the swelling of the polysaccharide product from the mixture. Preferably the alkali is caustic soda in a concentration of 2 to 30% by weight and the polysaccharide is separated by centrifugation. The agent may be a salt which does not combine with the polysaccharides in the presence of alkali such as sodium sulphate, potassium acetate, sodium acetate or ammonium chloride; or a salt which does combine, e.g. those containing Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Cu, Pb, Bi, Si, Al, Ba, Mg or Ca, such as ferric chloride, copper sulphate or acetate, lead acetate, aluminium levulinate or lactate, barium or calcium chloride, borax or sodium silicate; or MgO, Ca(OH)2 or Mg(OH)2. The treated polysaccharides may be further purified by washing on a screen, by flotation or by air sifting and the moist flours obtained may be dried, washed with water, salt solutions or water alcohol mixtures or water ketone mixtures or solvents, or converted into derivatives by enzyme action, oxidation, or substitution, or by treating with acids. The finished product may be used as swelling agents, thickening agents, dressings, adhesives, dispersing agents, disinfectants or softeners.
