abstract | The invention comprises phosphonic acid esters of the formula, (CH3O)(RO)P(O)CH(OH)CCl3 wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. ethyl, isopropyl and n-butyl radicals. They may be prepared by reacting dialkyl phosphite (CH3O)(RO)P-OH with chloral. The reaction may be at a temperature, for example, of from 30 to 50 DEG C. in an inert solvent such as benzene, and yields a colourless oil as a product. The products are insecticides, particularly against house-flies and may be used with a carrier. Specification 841,671 and U.S.A. Specification 2,485,573 are referred to.ALSO:Insecticidal compositions comprise phosphonic acid esters of formula (CH3O)(RO)P(O)CH(OH)CCL3, wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. ethyl, isopropyl and n-butyl radicals, as the active ingredient with a carrier, e.g. acetone or sugar.
