titleOfInvention Process for the polymerization of conjugated dienes
abstract A substantially liquid composition used as a catalyst for polymerizing conjugated dienes is prepared by ageing a solid low pressure catalyst in admixture with a hydrocarbon diluent for a period sufficient to allow catalytic activity to be attained in the liquid fraction and thereafter separating any residual solid therefrom. The solid low pressure catalyst is formed by mixing at least two components:-(1) a salt of a transition metal of Groups IV, V, VI or VIII or of Mn and (2) LiAlH4 or an organo-compound of a Group Ia, IIb or IIIb metal, preferably either (a) a compound R1R2AlX wherein R1 is hydrocarbon, R2 is H or hydrocarbon, and X is H, halogen, alkoxy, aryloxy, the residue of a secondary amine, amide, mercapton, thiophenol, carboxylic or sulphonic acid, or (b) selected from Al trialkyls, Mg or Zn alkyls, or Grignard compounds. Specified monomers are butadiene; isoprene; 2:3-dimethyl-, 2-ethyl-, 2-isopropyl- and 2-amylbutadiene; 4-methyl-1:3-hexadiene, 2-methyl-1:3-pentadiene, 2:4:6-octatriene and piperylene. The catalysts in the examples are prepared from the ingredients shown, and used for the polymerization of butadiene unless otherwise indicated:- (1) i-Bu3Al, TiCl4; (2) i-Bu3Al, TiCl3; (3) i-Bu3Al, TiI4; (4) and (5), (8), (11) and (12) i-Bu3Al, CoCl2; (6) Et3Al, CoCl2; (7) i-Bu3Al, VCl3; (9) and (10) i-Bu3Al, NiCl2 (13) LiAlH4, MnCl2 (isoprene); (14) Et2AlCl, ZrOCl2 (butadiene-isoprene copolymerization); (15) and (16) Et3Al2Cl3, CoCl2. The polymers produced by the method of the invention have a high content of the cis-1:4 configuration. Specification 906,056 is referred to.
