A combined developer and fixer for photographic silver halide emulsions comprises an aqueous solution of 1 -phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, hydroquinone, sodium sulphite, sodium thiosulphate and, as alkaline buffer, an alkali metal aluminate or a mixture of sodium hydroxide and potassium alum, the pH of the resulting solution being 11 to 12, the ratio of total developer to sodium thiosulphate being from 1 : 2 to 1 : 20 by weight and the ratio of 1-phenyl- 3-pyrazolidone to hydroquinone being 1 : 40 to 1 : 1 by weight. The compositions may also include photographic glycin, potassium bromide and benztriazole or 6-nitrobenzimidazole.
