abstract | The invention comprises magnesium carbonato hydroxoaluminates of formula: Mgn [Al2(OH)5+2n,.HCO3] where n is from 1 to 5. The compounds are prepared by the following methods: reacting a solution of magnesium bicarbonate or a solution of a magnesium salt and sodium bicarbonate with a solution of an alkali aluminate, e.g. sodium aluminate; reacting a solution of salts (e.g. chlorides) of aluminium and magnesium with sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate; suspending a magnesium hydroxoaluminate in a solution containing bicarbonate ions (e.g. a solution of magnesium bicarbonate); reacting a solution of aluminium and magnesium salts with sodium hydroxide, and adding sodium bicarbonate followed by a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium bicarbonate to precipitate all the magnesium; reacting a solution of aluminium and magnesium salts with a solution of sodium carbonate preferably in the presence of ammonium chloride; and reacting a slurry of basic magnesium carbonate and sodium carbonate with a solution of aluminium chloride. Examples are given. |
