titleOfInvention New cyclopentanophenanthrene compounds and process for the production thereof
abstract The invention comprises 6-bromosteroids of the general formulae:- <FORM:0904123/IV (b)/1> the corresponding 3-alkyl enol ethers of the D 4 compounds, compounds of the general formula:- <FORM:0904123/IV (b)/2> (R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon carboxylic acid acyl group of less than 12 carbons, R2 is a lower alkyl or alkinyl group of less than 6 carbons, R3 is hydrogen or methyl, X is hydrogen or fluorine and Y is a single or double bond between C1 and C2), and a process for the preparation of 6a -bromo-D 4-3-keto steroids of the androstene and pregnene series which comprises reacting the 3-alkyl ether of an appropriate D 4-3-keto steroid with hypobromous acid (or its equivalent, e.g. N-bromosuccinimide) and inverting the configuration at C6 of the resulting 6b -bromo-D 4-3-keto steroid with strong acid. The D 1,4-compounds are preferably prepared by dehydrogenation of the D 4 - compounds with selenium dioxide in t-butanol, and the corresponding 3-alkyl enol ethers are prepared by reacting the 6a - or 6b -bromo-D 4-3-ketones with a lower alkyl orthoformate. The invention is illustrated by sixteen examples.
