abstract | 903,180. Radiation thickness gauges. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. May 31, 1961 [Aug. 5, 1960], No. 27181/60. Class 40 (3). The thickness of material which exists in the form of a hollow body, or is employed to constitute one wall of a hollow chamber or tube, is measured by passing a gas through the cavity within the body, or through the formed chamber or tube, irradiating the material with a source of alpha, beta- or gamma radiation, and determining the ionization of the gas to provide a measure of the thickness of the material. Air, or gas such as argon, is fed from a container 1 through a hole 5 in a turbine blade 4 clamped in a support 3 and irradiated by a source 15 of radiation located on a probe 14 mounted in a carriage 16 traversable to different measuring positions along the length of the blade 4. The gas is fed through pipes 7, 8 to an ionization chamber 9 connected to a recording electrometer 13. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the tube 8 leads to a Geiger counter connected to a pulse counter and indicator. If beta radiation is employed, the source may be Strontium 90, Yttrium 90, Cerium 144 or Praseodymium 144. For thickness of onetenth of an inch or more, gamma rays or X-rays may be employed. |
