abstract | Lithium phosphate, for use as a catalyst in the isomerization of an alkylene oxide to an unsaturated alcohol, is prepared by precipitating lithium phosphate in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and then leaching the precipitate with water to remove all but 0,05 to 1% by weight of the alkali metal hydroxide based on the weight of lithium phosphate. The lithium phosphate is precipitated by mixing a solution of lithium nitrate, hydroxide, acetate, formate or borate, with a solution of sodium or potassium phosphate or of phosphoric acid, the alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium hydroxide, being present in one or other or both solutions. The precipitate is then washed several times with hot water until it contains 0,05 to 1% by weight of the alkali metal hydroxide. It is used as a catalyst as prepared or mixed with one-tenth to an equal weight of activated carbon or diatomaceous earth. Examples are given. Specification 603,815 is referred to.ALSO:Alkylene oxides containing 3 to 5 carbon atoms are converted to the corresponding alcohols by passing the alkylene oxide in the gaseous state at a temperature of 250 DEG C. to 350 DEG C. through a bed of lithium phosphate catalyst, the lithium phosphate having been prepared in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, all but 0.05 to 1% by weight based on the lithium phosphate of the alkali metal hydroxide subsequently having been removed from the lithium phosphate by leaching. The preparation of allyl alcohol from propylene oxide is particularly described. Specification 603,815 is referred to. |
