Organic compounds having as basic substituent a heterocyclic ring containing at least one nitrogen atom (e.g. a piperidine, pyrrolidine, piperazine, morpholine or oxazolidine ring) are prepared by hydrogenating nitriles in the presence of organic compounds containing a halogen atom attached to each terminal carbon atom and in the presence of a basic condensing agent and a hydrogenation catalyst. The process is applicable particularly to the production of 10-[(41-methyl- and 41-hydroxyethyl-piperazinyl-11)-alkyl]-phenthiazines from phenthiazine-10-alkylonitriles and N-methyl- or N - hydroxyethyl - di - (haloalkyl) - amines. Examples are also given of the preparation of 4-(g -hydroxypropyl)-, 4-(b -phenylethyl)-, 4-dimethylaminoethyl and 4-nonyl-1-methylpiperazine and g -morpholinopropanol. Acid addition salts of the products are described. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 716,206, 716,230 and 780,193. |
