titleOfInvention Process for producing white and colour resist effects on natural or regenerated cellulose fabrics
abstract White or coloured resist effects are produced on fabrics of natural or regenerated cellulose fibres by padding the fabric with a liquor containing a leuco sulphuric acid ester of an anthraquinoid or indigoid vat dyestuff and a salt, preferably an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, of nitrous acid, then drying and overprinting with a paste containing a compound of the formula:-X-NH-Y wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a phenyl radical which may be substituted by alkoxy or amino groups and Y represents a primary amino group; a sulphonic acid, sulphonamide, thiosulphonamide or sulphonic acid alkyl ester group; a carboxyalkyl group; a hydroxyl group; a phenyl radical which may be substituted by halogen atoms, or by nitro, amino, imino, alkoxy, sulphonic acid, sulphonamide, thiosulphonamide, carboxylic acid, amide or thioamide groups or by an N-anilino radical that may also be substituted by carboxylic acid, amide, thioamide, sulphonic acid, sulphonamide or thiosulphonamide groups; or a benzoyl group or a thiobenzoyl group; or where appropriate, a metal or amine salt of the above compound, the compound serving to destroy the nitrite and to yield a white resist effect, coloured resist effects being obtained by also incorporating in the paste, a vat dyestuff and a reducing agent and development of the leuco ester being finally effected by treatment with dilute sulphuric acid, if necessary, particularly when a coloured resist effect is to be obtained, following an intermediate steaming operation. Specified compounds of the above formula are hydrazine, urea, thiourea, hydroxylamine, diphenylamine, p-amino-diphenylamine, aniline and its halogen substitution products, p-nitraniline, anisidine, phenylglycine, p-methoxyphenylglycine, p-aminophenylglycine sulphanilic acid, anthranilic acid, 3- or 4-aminobenzoic acid, 2- or 3-aminobenzene sulphonic acid or the salts, esters, amides or thioamides thereof, phenylhydrazine, phenylhydrazine p-sulphonic or -carboxylic acid, p-phenylhydrazine-sulphonic acid-methyl or -ethyl ester, benzoic acid amide and amidosulphonic acid or esters thereof. Specified reducing agents for use in the paste together with vat dyestuffs are various aldehyde-sulphoxylates and thiourea dioxide. The paste may also contain the usual auxiliary fixing agents for vat dyestuffs such as glycerine, urea, triethanolamine, and anthraquinone. Examples are given.
