abstract | The invention comprises 2-(61-methoxy-31-indolyl) 1-nitropropane; and a process for the production of 2-(61-methoxy-31-indolyl) 1-propylamine, in which 6-methoxy-3-formyl indole in an inert solvent is reacted with nitromethane in the presence of an organic base to form 2-(61-methoxy-31-indolyl) 1-nitroethene, which is isolated and condensed with a methyl magnesium halide to produce 2-(61-methoxy-31-indolyl) 1-nitropropane; this is reduced to 2-(61-methoxy-31-indolyl) 1-propylamine, which is converted to its picrate and re-formed by hydrolysis with an alkali metal hydroxide.
